How to Sleep After Oral Surgery
Positions, Precautions, and Tips to Rest and Recover Comfortably
After oral surgery especially implants, wisdom teeth removal, or bone grafting how you sleep matters. The way you rest can reduce swelling, help you heal faster, and prevent painful complications like dry socket.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to sleeping well after your procedure.
Night 1 to Night 3: Sleep Elevated
- Keep your head propped up with 2–3 pillows or use a wedge pillow.
- Sleeping flat can increase swelling and throbbing.
- A recliner is a great option if lying flat is uncomfortable.
Why it matters:
Elevation helps reduce inflammation and bleeding during the most sensitive part of your healing.
Avoid Sleeping on Your Side
- If surgery was on one side, pressure can cause pain or disrupt healing.
- Sleeping on your back is best.
- You can place a rolled towel or small pillow behind your neck or knees to stay comfortable and stable.
Don’t Sleep With Ice Packs On
- Ice helps, but only in short intervals while you’re awake (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).
- Leaving an ice pack on overnight can damage skin or nerves.
Use a Towel Over Your Pillow
- Some light bleeding may continue the first night.
- Cover your pillow with a clean towel just in case.
Set an Alarm for Medication (if needed)
- Pain can spike if meds wear off overnight.
- Set a reminder to stay ahead of the discomfort, especially during the first 48 hours.
What to Avoid Before Bed
- Don’t rinse vigorously or spit hard.
- Avoid straws and carbonated drinks.
- Skip alcohol and tobacco—both delay healing and increase bleeding risk.
After Day 3–4
- You can begin easing into more comfortable sleep positions.
- Keep checking for signs of swelling or pressure and adjust as needed.
- Continue sleeping slightly elevated if you notice puffiness or discomfort when lying flat.
When to Call Us
- If pain wakes you up consistently after Day 3
- If you can’t lie back at all due to throbbing or pressure
- If you notice signs of dry socket (intense pain, bad smell, or empty-looking socket)
